The temple is an active place of worship, hosting elaborate Taoist ceremonies, an annual birthday festival for its main deity on the 23rd day of the seventh lunar month, and community rituals such as the Crossing the Peace Bridge ceremony. Visitors interested in living folk religion will find it a genuine glimpse into Taoist practice in East Malaysia.↗
The Deity and the Temple's Origins
Fa Zhu Sheng Jun — often called Fa Zhu Gong (法主公) — was a real Taoist priest from Yongtai County, Fujian Province, who lived during the Song Dynasty. After his death, he was deified for his legendary powers over demons, venomous snakes, and calamity. His worship spread with Hokkien migrants to Penang, Singapore, and eventually to Sabah, where the Hokkien community maintained strong temple traditions. Wei Sheng Koung is described by a visitor review as the first Penampang temple established to honor this particular deity, a point of local pride for devotees.
