Sam Shan Ancient Temple (Three Mountain Kings Temple)
Sam Shan Ancient Temple (三山古庙) is a century-old Hakka house of worship tucked into the quiet tin-mining town of Malim Nawar, also called Sungai Puru, in Kampar district of Perak. Set along Jalan Malim Nawar by the river that gave the town its Chinese name, the temple honours the Three Mountain Kings (Sam Shan Guo Wang), a deity cult carried south from the Hepo area of Guangdong by Chinese settlers who came to work the tin. What makes this unassuming village temple worth a detour is how alive it remains: folk-style murals glow inside, and each year its lunar-second-month birthday festival draws pilgrims from across peninsular Malaysia for a celebrated ritual in which couples pray for children. For travellers following Perak's Kinta Valley heritage trail, it is a warm, working example of how a tin-rush community kept its gods, its language and its good works going for over a hundred years.
