AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Butterfly Beach is a palm-lined, soft-sand stretch of coastline along Channel Drive in upscale Montecito, sitting directly across from the historic Four Seasons Resort Biltmore. Unlike most beaches on this part of the California coast, it faces toward the west, so the sun genuinely drops into the water—a spectacle that makes it a beloved local spot for evening strolls and sunset photography.↗
Named for the monarch butterflies that once gathered in the native grasses along the shore, the beach is deliberately undeveloped: no restrooms, no lifeguards, no rentals. That stripped-down character, framed by manicured sea walls and the Santa Ynez Mountains behind, gives it an authentic, locals-first feel right in the middle of one of America's most exclusive seaside villages.↗
A rare west-facing shore
On the South Coast, most beaches angle to the south, so you watch the sun fade inland. Butterfly Beach breaks the rule. Its east–west orientation means the light spills across the Pacific and sets straight over the horizon, casting the kind of glow that draws photographers and families back at dusk. It's just as good at dawn, and the calm morning water is ideal for paddleboarding.
