Butterfly Beach
Butterfly Beach is a palm-lined, soft-sand stretch of coastline along Channel Drive in upscale Montecito, sitting directly across from the historic Four Seasons Resort Biltmore. Unlike most beaches on this part of the California coast, it faces toward the west, so the sun genuinely drops into the water—a spectacle that makes it a beloved local spot for evening strolls and sunset photography. Named for the monarch butterflies that once gathered in the native grasses along the shore, the beach is deliberately undeveloped: no restrooms, no lifeguards, no rentals. That stripped-down character, framed by manicured sea walls and the Santa Ynez Mountains behind, gives it an authentic, locals-first feel right in the middle of one of America's most exclusive seaside villages.
