AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Plage de la Grande Conche is the big, arc-shaped sandy beach that defines the seaside resort of Royan, on the Charente-Maritime coast where the Gironde estuary opens into the Atlantic. In Saintongeais patois a 'conche' is a fine-sand beach tucked into a bay between two cliffy headlands, and this is the largest of Royan's five—about 2,600 metres of pale, almost powdery sand curving from the pleasure-port jetty toward the Pointe de Vallières.↗↗
What makes it such an easy day out is the combination of space and city comfort: right in the centre of town, beside the harbour and a busy seafront lined with cafés, ice-cream parlours and restaurants, yet broad enough that you can find a quiet stretch even in peak season. Bathing is guarded in summer, the water is monitored and rated excellent, and the beach carries the international Blue Flag (Pavillon Bleu) for environmental quality—Royan's signature bay, and genuinely one of the most family-friendly beaches on the Aquitaine coast.↗↗↗
