AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Château Sigognac is a working Médoc wine estate on the gravelly plain of Saint-Yzans-de-Médoc, a short drive north of Bordeaux where the vineyards lean toward the Gironde estuary. A centuries-old property listed among the Cru Bourgeois of the Médoc, it produces structured reds from a single, contiguous vineyard and opens its cellar door to visitors for tours and tastings throughout the week.↗↗↗
What draws wine lovers here is the combination of history and honesty: an estate said to stand on the ruins of a Roman villa, now farmed with an organic conversion underway, and a range of cuvées—from the grand vin to an 80-year-vine prestige parcel—that show what the Médoc's clay-limestone soils can do in disciplined hands.↗↗
An estate with Roman and literary roots
The story of Sigognac reaches back well beyond the bottles on its shelves. Sixteenth-century records mention the noble house of "Segougnac," tied to the Count of Lesparre, and the present-day estate dates from the following century. Local tradition holds that the château was raised on the ruins of a Roman villa, with thermal baths recorded nearby in the Bois Carré.
