AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kappelinmäki Nature Trail is a short, rewarding loop through old deciduous forest on Kuusisto island in Kaarina, Finland, where the themes of cultural history and nature intertwine. From the summit of Kappelinmäki — a rocky hill about 50 metres above sea level — sweeping views open over Kuusisto Bay, while interpretive boards along the path tell the story of the landscape's human past. The trail sits right next to the atmospheric ruins of Kuusisto Bishop's Castle, making it easy to combine a forest walk with a fascinating medieval heritage visit.↗↗
A Forest Steeped in History
The trail's theme is how centuries of human activity shaped the natural environment here. Kappelinmäki's slopes support a mix of habitats: bare rocky summit, old-growth spruce forest on the hill's flanks, and oak, elm, and linden on the sheltered southern side. The nearby manor's old gardens and orchards have added botanical diversity over the years. In May, wood anemones and lesser celandine bloom along the path, while bird song fills the undergrowth throughout the summer months.↗↗↗
