The best time to visit is from November to March, when days are longest and temperatures are mildest, with December and January being the most pleasant. The rainiest stretch is typically April through June, while July and August are the coldest and windiest months. Summer is also when the famous penguin colonies and glacier treks are most accessible. If you want to see the city under snow, winter offers a quieter, starkly beautiful landscape.
Stay in the city center around Avenida San Martín and the waterfront for easy access to restaurants, shops, and the port. It suits first-time visitors and those taking day tours. For a quieter, scenic stay, the hillside area near the Martial Glacier offers views and nature, with hotels like Las Hayas and Los Acebos. The Bahía Cauquén area, a bit outside the center, is calm and waterfront, home to Los Cauquenes Resort. Choose the center for convenience, the hills for views, or Bahía Cauquén for tranquility.
Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego is the top must-see, with forests, coasts, and trails. Laguna Esmeralda offers a striking turquoise lake on a scenic hike. Museo del Fin del Mundo tells the region's history in a historic building. Martial Glacier is an accessible glacier with views over the city. Faro Les Éclaireurs is the iconic red lighthouse in the Beagle Channel, best seen by boat.
Full-day tours from Ushuaia go to Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, where you can see the End of the World Train and coastal scenery, and to Martillo Island for penguin colonies. Other tours head to Lake Fagnano for 4WD off-road exploration, and to Laguna Esmeralda or Glaciar Vinciguerra for trekking. These trips each take a full day, so plan an extra day beyond your time in the city.
Plan 3 to 4 days. In 2 days you can see the main sights: Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, the End of the World Sign, Museo del Fin del Mundo, and Martial Glacier. Add a third day for a longer hike like Laguna Esmeralda or Glaciar Vinciguerra. If you want a penguin tour or a lake excursion, add one more day. A day trip needs an extra day on top of that.
