The best months are May, June, and September: warm, sunny days around 20-23°C, with moderate rain. July and August are the driest and warmest, but also the busiest and most crowded. October through December is the rainiest stretch, with over 15 rain days each month, and cool, damp weather. If you want to see the famous Feast of Saint James on July 25, plan for that, but expect full streets. Aim for late spring or early autumn for the most comfortable visit.
The Old Town (Casco Histórico) is the best choice for most visitors, with the cathedral, Alameda park, and the Parador de Santiago and San Francisco Hotel Monumento right there. It suits anyone who wants to be at the heart of the sights. For a quieter stay, the Ensanche district offers a more residential feel, with the Eurostars Araguaney nearby and easy walking access to the Old Town. If you prefer being near the green spaces and the train station, the area around San Lázaro and the park also works well.
The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is the heart of the city, the pilgrimage goal and a masterpiece of Romanesque and Baroque architecture. Parque da Alameda offers the best green escape with wide views over the old town. Parque de San Domingos de Bonaval, a former convent, has a striking spiral staircase and a great viewpoint. Mosteiro de San Martiño Pinario impresses with its grand baroque cloister and church. Colexiata de Santa María a Real do Sar is a unique Romanesque church with leaning walls that make it unforgettable.
Take the full-day tour to Finisterre and Muxia along the Costa da Morte for dramatic Atlantic cliffs and the legendary end of the Camino. The Rias Baixas tour covers the fjord-like estuaries, with a winery stop and optional mussel boat. Another day trip heads north to the vast white sand of Cathedrals Beach, the Roman walls of Lugo, and the coast of Asturias.
Plan 2 to 3 days to see the Cathedral, its museum, the Alameda park, and the quieter convents and churches. A third day lets you add San Domingos de Bonaval and Santa María a Real do Sar at a relaxed pace. If you want to take one of the full-day tours to Finisterre or the Rías Baixas, add one extra day. With 3 full days you can cover the city and one day trip.
