AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched on Norwalk's working waterfront, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is the only aquarium in the world devoted entirely to Long Island Sound, the estuary just outside its doors. Rather than a generic tunnel of tropical fish, it walks you through a single living ecosystem: a freshwater river, the shallow salt marsh, the open Sound and finally the deep ocean, packed with 6,800-plus animals along the way.↗↗↗
What makes it special is the combination of hands-on exhibits and the chance to go out on the water itself. Inside you can stroke sharks and stingrays in touch pools and watch harbor seals glide past floor-to-ceiling windows; outside, a research catamaran carries you onto the Sound for seal-spotting, birding and sunset cruises. Easy to reach from I-95 or Metro-North, with cafés, a gift shop and a 4D theater on site, it adds up to a relaxed, family-friendly day that feels genuinely tied to its coastal place.↗↗↗
