AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Narrows is Zion National Park's most famous and immersive canyon experience: instead of a trail, you walk in the river. The Virgin River has cut a gorge so tight that walls 1,000 feet tall close in to as little as 20–30 feet across, turning an ordinary hike into an adventure of wading upstream over slippery boulders beneath a sliver of sky.↗↗
This is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon, and one of the most popular places in the park. What makes it special is the feeling of being inside the landscape rather than observing it from above—the cool, milky-green river, the cathedral of striated rock, and the constant play of light filtering down through the slot. It rewards careful preparation, but you do not need to be a mountaineer to enjoy it: a short wade upstream from the Temple of Sinawava already delivers the most spectacular, tightest parts of the canyon.↗
The classic route here, reflected in the 'Bottom Up' start point, requires no permit—you simply walk the paved Riverside Walk to the river and turn upstream. How far you go is entirely your choice, from an hour of wading to a full-day push toward Big Spring. On high-risk days the river can close to all travel, so checking conditions and understanding flash-flood risk are as much a part of the experience as the hike itself.
