AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Özgür Bayanlar Plajı — whose name translates roughly as "Free Women's Beach" — is a women-only seaside destination on the Gemlik Gulf coast in Armutlu, a small resort district on the southern tip of Turkey's Yalova peninsula. Established by the Armutlu Municipality in response to local demand, the beach provides a peaceful, screened swimming environment where women can relax and swim without mixed-gender crowds. With a Blue Flag–certified clean sea, a sandy shore, and practical facilities including sunbeds, showers, changing cabins, a café, and a children's playground, it has become a beloved summer retreat for families and women travelers seeking comfort and privacy on the Marmara coast.↗↗↗
What Makes It Special
The concept is straightforward yet meaningful: a stretch of Marmara Sea coast reserved exclusively for women and young children. Adult men are not admitted; boys above a certain age (typically 5–8, depending on the season's policy) are turned away. The beach was created in 2022 after Armutlu's mayor, Mustafa Tokat, acknowledged that many local and visiting women felt unable to swim comfortably at mixed beaches due to faith or cultural sensitivities. The response was a dedicated shoreline section — now a firmly established summer institution — where modesty concerns simply disappear.
