AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Maruf Pond is a small irrigation reservoir nestled in the rolling countryside of Boyabat district in Sinop Province, Turkey. Set at roughly 500 metres elevation among the Gökırmak Valley’s agricultural heartland, this quiet water body is best known for its clean, high-quality waters and the fishing opportunities that regularly stocked carp provide.↗↗↗
Though not a conventional tourist attraction, Maruf Pond offers visitors a genuine taste of rural Anatolian landscape — open fields, village life, and the calm of a freshwater reservoir far from the busy Black Sea coast. Anglers and nature lovers who find their way here are rewarded with stillness, birdlife, and a setting that feels entirely unspoiled.↗
A Reservoir Built for the Land
Maruf Pond — known locally as Maruf Göleti or Maruf Sulama Baraj Göleti — was constructed to irrigate the fertile farmland of its surroundings. Boyabat district, where the pond sits about 17 kilometres from the town centre, is one of Turkey’s notable rice-growing areas, with paddies stretching along the Gökırmak and Kızılırmak river valleys. The reservoir plays a direct role in sustaining this agricultural tradition, storing spring and winter water for summer irrigation.
