AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lake Erçek is a vast alkaline lake nestled in a tectonic basin just 30 kilometers east of Van city, at nearly 1,800 meters elevation. Known as one of Turkey's most important bird paradise sites, it hosts over 180 species and draws thousands of flamingos each autumn, making it a world-class destination for birdwatchers and nature photographers alike.↗↗↗
The lake's shimmering, mineral-rich waters are framed by steep rocky cliffs on the northern and western shores, while the east and south open into shallow mudflats and reedbed deltas. This striking contrast of rugged geology and soft wetland habitat creates one of eastern Anatolia's most dramatic natural landscapes.↗↗
A Bird Paradise of Global Significance
Lake Erçek sits on one of the world's great bird migration corridors. The Van Governorate calls it "the sibling of Lake Van" — a barrier lake born from tectonic forces, now home to roughly half of Turkey's 453 recorded bird species. The lake holds IBA (Important Bird Area) and KBA (Key Biodiversity Area) designations of global significance, recognized for breeding and passage populations that include the endangered white-headed duck, great sand-plover, and pied avocet.
