A port city that moved with the sea

Ephesus did not sit still. Founded by Ionian Greek colonists and long associated with the Anatolian mother goddess later worshipped as Artemis of Ephesus, the settlement shifted location over the centuries as the coastline retreated and the Kaystros (Küçük Menderes) river silted up its harbours. General Lysimachus refounded the city in around 300 BC on the site visitors see today, and when Rome took over the region, Ephesus became the administrative capital of the province of Asia. Its port eventually clogged with sediment, the marshes bred malaria, and the city declined—but its marble bones were left beautifully intact, exposed by excavations that have continued, with Austrian teams among them, since the 1890s.↗↗↗

The same river that doomed the harbour also explains a curious feature of the visit: the ancient waterfront now lies some distance inland, so from the upper seats of the Great Theatre you look out over what was once a busy sea channel and is now green agricultural plain. Ephesus was, in UNESCO's words, an outstanding example of a Roman port city with a sea channel and harbour basin—and the landscape quietly tells that story.↗↗

The great monuments, street by street

Most people walk the site downhill from the Upper Gate (the old Magnesian Gate) toward the Lower Gate, a route of roughly two to three kilometres over ancient stone. Near the entrance you pass the well-preserved Odeon, a small roofed council theatre that seated about 1,400, and the vast State Agora, the civic heart of the city. From there the main colonnaded artery, Curetes Street, sweeps you past the monumental Trajan Fountain, the compact and exquisitely carved Temple of Hadrian, and the surprisingly candid remains of public latrines and bath complexes.↗↗↗

The showpiece arrives where Curetes Street meets the Marble Street: the Library of Celsus. Built in the early 2nd century AD as a tomb and library for the consul Tiberius Julius Celsus, its soaring two-storey façade—niches once holding statues that personified Wisdom, Knowledge, Thought and Valour—was reconstructed in the 1970s and remains one of the most impressive ancient façades anywhere. It once housed some 12,000 scrolls, stored in wall niches left with an air gap to keep damp away from the papyri. Beyond it, Marble Street leads down to the Great Theatre, and the view from those upper rows, taking in the theatre's intact stage wall and the plain beyond, is one of the great sensations of the Mediterranean.↗↗↗

The Terrace Houses: Ephesus's best-kept secret

If you do only one thing beyond the headline monuments, make it the Terrace Houses (the Hanghäuser) on the slope of Mount Bulbul beside Curetes Street. Sheltered under a modern glass-and-steel canopy, these were the townhouses of Ephesus's elite from the 1st century BC to the 7th century AD, and they reward the separate admission ticket more than almost anything else on the site. Their walls still glow with painted frescoes of mythological scenes and theatre masks, their floors carry intricate mosaics, and the rooms reveal bronze water pipes and underfloor hypocaust heating—the comforts of upper-class Roman life preserved in remarkable detail. Scratched graffiti, including gladiatorial scenes and ships, was left on the plaster by ancient residents and visitors alike.↗↗↗

A sacred city, too

Ephesus matters far beyond archaeology. It was one of the seven churches of Asia addressed in the Book of Revelation, the setting of the riot of the silversmiths described in Acts—in the Great Theatre, tradition holds—and a pivotal place in early Christianity, hosting the church councils of AD 431 and 449 that helped shape the veneration of Mary. Just outside the main ruins, the domed House of the Virgin Mary on the hillsides, believed to be where Mary spent her final years, has been a place of pilgrimage since the 5th century, and the great Basilica of St John on Ayasuluk Hill marks where the apostle was venerated. Even the nearby Temple of Artemis—now reduced to a single reconstructed column on the old foundations—was once numbered among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and drew pilgrims from across the Mediterranean.↗↗↗

Around Selçuk and beyond the walls

The town of Selçuk, a few kilometres away, is the natural base and finishing point for a visit. It holds the Ephesus Archaeological Museum, where many of the site's original sculptures—including versions of the many-breasted Lady of Artemis—now stand, the 14th-century Isa Bey Mosque in fine Seljuk stonework, and the ruins of the Basilica of St John with good views over the plain. The hill village of Şirince, known for its restored Greek houses and wine, is an easy half-day add-on. Together these sites, spread over an area of roughly ten square kilometres, make a full day, or even two, well spent.↗↗

Planning your visit

Budget a minimum of two to three hours for the main circuit, and allow half a day or more if you want the Terrace Houses and the museum, or to combine Ephesus with Mary's House and St John. The site opens daily from early morning (Maps lists 08:30 to 20:00; always confirm current seasonal hours before you go), and admission is ticketed, with the Terrace Houses requiring a separate ticket that is best bought at the gate when you enter. The ruins are largely open-air with little shade, so mornings are the most comfortable time: arriving at opening lets you see the Library of Celsus in soft light and beat the midday heat and the cruise-day crowds that flow in from the resort town of Kuşadası, about 20 km away.↗↗↗
