AT A GLANCE
Why go?
San Lak Mueang Khlung is the city pillar shrine of Khlung, a quiet river town in Chanthaburi Province with deep roots in both Thai and Chinese culture. Though it looks like a modest concrete building, its story reads like a mystery: for decades, locals worshipped at a small Chinese shrine without realizing they were honoring their own town's founding spirit.↗↗
The shrine sits on Thetsaban 1 Road in the heart of Khlung's old town, close to the district municipal offices. It remains an active place of worship and blessing-seeking, managed by the Khlung Foundation and sustained by the town's large Chinese-Thai community.↗↗
A Shrine Hidden in Plain Sight
The site's history stretches back to when it was a military camp. Nestled between two large ironwood trees stood a small Chinese shrine that local families—both Thai and Chinese—visited for blessings on their households. Nobody suspected it was anything more than an ordinary spirit house.↗
