AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Úhornianske sedlo (999 m) is a wide, grassy mountain saddle in the Volovské vrchy range of eastern Slovakia, perched on the quiet frontier between the historic regions of Spiš and Gemer. Best known as a trailhead and road-crossing rather than a dramatic summit, it earns a high visitor rating for one simple reason: at almost a thousand metres of altitude, you can pull over, park, and step straight onto ridgeline trails without first grinding up hundreds of metres of climb.↗↗
Set between the Panský vrch (1,058 m) and Malá Pipitka (1,087 m) peaks, the saddle opens onto broad views across beech forest and rolling ridge, and serves as a launching point for some of the finest walks in the range. Whether you come on foot, by bike or even on cross-country skis, it is an easy, rewarding day-out destination that the crowds have largely overlooked.↗↗
A crossroads high in the Volovské vrchy
Úhornianske sedlo takes its name from the village of Úhorná lying below it to the east, and its very position makes it a meeting point. The II/549 road running through the saddle links Rožňava with Smolník and Mníšek nad Hnilcom, physically joining Spiš and Gemer across the ridge. For walkers, it is a signposted junction: the red-marked Cesta hrdinov SNP (the E8 main trail) crosses here between Pipitka and Sedlo Krivé, while the green trail descends toward Úhorná and on to Krásnohorské Podhradie, and a yellow cycling route also threads through the saddle.
