AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Skulpturparken is a lush, tree-lined garden behind Norrköping's Art Museum, where fifteen sculptures by some of Sweden's most celebrated modern artists are displayed among lawns, shrubs, walking paths, and water. Inaugurated in 1960, this free-access outdoor gallery is open around the clock and offers a tranquil encounter with Swedish sculpture spanning from Carl Milles to contemporary artists like Jacob Dahlgren.↗
A Garden Built for Art
The sculpture park came about through a generous donation by master builder Sture Gillgård, who wanted to beautify the garden area south of the museum building. City gardener Stig Hellerström designed the landscape according to careful plans, and the park was inaugurated with ceremony on September 24, 1960. The grounds feature deliberately planted shrubs, mature trees, structured walkways, and open grass areas that interact with the sculptures and water features throughout the space.↗
Today the park contains sixteen artworks, fifteen of which are sculptures. Several pieces are unique casts commissioned through private donations specifically for this location, making the park an irreplaceable collection in its own right. The works belong to the museum's permanent collection but live outdoors, free for everyone to enjoy at any time.
