Natsuyakisuwa Shrine
Natsuyakisuwa Shrine is a small, easy-to-miss Shinto shrine tucked into the Okuryoke valley of Misakubo, a mountain district in the far northern reaches of Hamamatsu's Tenryū Ward. There is no grand complex or bustling festival ground here — just a quiet woodland sanctuary standing at the head of a remote river valley, open around the clock and free to enter, the kind of place that rewards travelers who have come deep into Shizuoka's highlands rather than those passing through. What makes this little shrine worth a pause is its name: 'Suwa' marks it as part of the far-flung network of shrines dedicated to the deity of Lake Suwa in neighboring Nagano. The Suwa faith reached this exact valley through old routes between Shinano and the Enshū mountains, and visiting one of its remote branches here gives a feel for how a regional religion threaded itself into the most isolated Japanese hamlets.
