Kwadebossen
Tucked into the sandy interior of Flanders, the Kwadebossen is a woodland that rewards the curious walker with deep-shaded paths, towering old trees and a genuine sense of being somewhere far from the road. Locally it is better known as the Bellebargiebos, and the two names hint at two different stories: one of the dense coppice thicket that once made these woods feel almost forbidding, the other of the bell-barges that once hauled its firewood down to the cities. At about 78 hectares, and recognised as a protected forest reserve (bosreservaat), it is one of the very few larger woods in this sand-region that has grown continuously as forest for centuries — never cleared for farmland. That unbroken history is what gives a walk here its particular atmosphere: mature oaks, slender beeches and a spring carpet of flowers that signal an old, undisturbed wood.
