Elbow Lake
Elbow Lake is a small, shallow freshwater lake in the rural Eastern Shore community of Mooseland, about an hour's drive northeast of downtown Halifax. It is the centrepiece of the Elbow Lake Environmental Education Centre (ELEEC), a conservation-managed nature reserve run with the Queen's University Biological Station and the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The draw here is not a beach resort but quiet, well-kept woodland trails that wind through wetlands, mixed forest and along the water's edge. Because the property is managed for conservation, public visitors are welcomed on foot to explore roughly eight kilometres of marked pedestrian trails at no charge, while the developed waterfront, docks and canoes are reserved for program guests and rental groups. It suits travellers who enjoy interpretive nature walks, bird and wetland watching, and a peaceful escape into Nova Scotia's Acadian forest, rather than those looking for a supervised swimming beach.
