Independence river

The Independence River is a swift, cold trout stream in the western Adirondack foothills of Lewis County, New York, named by the very forest preserve that bears its name. Winding through the Towns of Greig and Watson before joining the Black River, it is one of those quietly legendary waters in upstate New York: a thin ribbon of clear, fast water favored by wild brook trout and brown trout, set in a landscape of sandy forest soils, white pines, hardwoods and quiet ponds. There is no grand visitor center or ticketed attraction here—what draws people is the fishing, the trail network and the open, unhurried feel of state forest land. For the angler, the backcountry hiker, the horseback rider or anyone who simply wants to hear moving water in a real Adirondack setting, the Independence River offers a genuine, low-key outdoor day. It runs free and open year-round, with nearby small towns supplying gas, food and lodging, and the state forest and adjoining Forest Preserve giving you the trails, campsites and bank access to explore the river on foot.
