TaharawakamiyahachimanshaShinto shrine

Taharawakamiyahachimansha

Tahara Wakamiya Hachiman Shrine (田原若宮八幡社) sits quietly in the rice-country village of Ōta-Nagamatsu on the Kunisaki Peninsula, a short drive inland from the castle town of Kitsuki. Founded in the early 8th century by a spirit summoned from Usa — Japan's head shrine of Hachiman — it has served for more than 1,300 years as the guardian shrine of the Tahara area, and its compact, moss-walled precinct gathers the most characteristic features of Kunisaki's old shrines in a single, easy visit. What makes this village shrine worth a deliberate stop is its density of rare and registered treasures: a near-millennium-old ginkgo designated a natural monument, a Kamakura-period stone Kunisaki-tō pagoda, a 1429 Hachiman mandala painting, carved shrine halls lined side by side, and a distinctive wheeled-base torii — all within a rural grounds that are open and free to enter at any hour.
