Basu Road at the busy Champadali crossing in Barasat — the district capital of North 24 Parganas, just north of Kolkata — the Shri Shri Boromaa Kali Mandir is one of the most revered neighbourhood shrines in the area. Devotees simply call her Boro Maa, "the Great Mother," and the temple has become a centre of intense, living faith rather than a quiet monument. What sets this Kali temple apart is its combination of devotional warmth and unusual ritual practice. Here Maa Kali is worshipped strictly with vegetarian offerings — no animal sacrifice — and temple priests and visitors alike tell stories of wishes granted and hardships lifted for those who come to her court. The shrine is open to all free of charge, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays prasad is distributed to the gathered devotees.
