Baluarte de San MiguelHistorical place

Manila · PH

Baluarte de San Miguel

Baluarte de San Miguel is one of the old Spanish ramparts that once shielded Manila from the sea. Set within Fort Santiago in the walled city of Intramuros, this bastion—named for St. Michael the Archangel—was built to defend the fort's seaward side against attacks coming off Manila Bay. Today it is a quiet slice of colonial-era military engineering, easy to reach as part of a walk through Intramuros. What makes it worth pausing at is its place in the story of the Philippines' oldest fortified settlement. The baluarte anchors Fort Santiago's riverside and seaside defenses alongside the Medio Baluarte de San Francisco, and the Intramuros walls it belongs to were first honored as a National Historical Monument in 1951 and later declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2014. Standing on the thick stone rampart, you get a tactile sense of the heavy masonry that made a small walled city into the nerve center of Spanish Manila.
