Castello di BovinoCastle

Castello di Bovino

The Castello Ducale di Bovino is the commanding heart of one of Puglia's most atmospheric hill towns. Perched on a rocky spur in the southern Monti Dauni, this fortress-palace guards the narrow Vallo di Bovino gorge below and surveys the broad Tavoliere plain on the other side, and it has done so, in one form or another, for well over a thousand years. What makes the visit rewarding is that the castle reads like a timeline of southern Italy stacked into a single building: a Roman rocca, a Byzantine and Longobard lookout, a Norman keep, a Swabian stronghold, and finally a lavish baroque ducal residence created by the Spanish Guevara family. Today that same fabric holds a small diocesan museum, a community library and a hidden terraced garden, making it far more than an empty ruin.
