Mount Shibetsu
Mount Shibetsu (標津岳, Shibetsu-dake) is a 1,061-metre stratovolcano on the border between Nakashibetsu and Kiyosato towns in eastern Hokkaido, part of the Shiretoko mountain range. The well-maintained trail from Yoroushi Onsen rewards hikers with sweeping panoramas of Lake Kussharo, the Shiretoko peaks, and the towering face of Mount Shari—one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. Despite its modest elevation, the summit view is often described as one of Hokkaido's great unsung panoramas: a sudden, dramatic reveal of Shari-dake's rugged profile after a gentle forested climb through primeval spruce and larch. The mountain is also the source of the Shibetsu River, and its name derives from this role as the river's origin.
