Çınarlı Cami

In the historic Bey neighbourhood of Gaziantep, Çınarlı Mosque stands on ground that witnessed some of the fiercest fighting during the city's 1920–21 defence against French occupation. Though the current structure is a modest 1950s reconstruction, the site carries deep emotional weight for locals, who revere it as one of the city's "fighter mosques" — places where the struggle for survival was decided metre by metre. The mosque takes its name — Çınarlı means "with plane trees" — from the five grand plane trees that once shaded its courtyard. Those trees were burned during the French siege, and the mosque itself lost its minaret, dome, and walls. The Şehitler Abidesi (Martyrs' Monument), a slender stone column erected nearby, commemorates the 6,317 citizens who fell defending Gaziantep. Together, the mosque and monument form a small but powerful memorial complex in the heart of the old city.
