Con Temple

On a low hill called Gò Diệc, where the Mai Giang river slips toward the sea at Lạch Cờn, stands Con Temple (Đền Cờn), one of the most revered shrines of north-central Vietnam. The Nghệ saying puts it first among the region's four great temples—"Nhất Cờn, nhì Quả, tam Bạch Mã, tứ Chiêu Trưng"—and roughly 130,000 to 150,000 pilgrims and visitors pass through each year, swelling to thousands a day around the lunar new year. The temple honours the Four Holy Ladies (Tứ vị Thánh nương), legendary royal women of China's fallen Southern Song court whose bodies, the story goes, drifted ashore here smelling of orchid and cinnamon. Fishermen began praying to them before each voyage, and kings of the Trần and Lê dynasties are said to have credited them with naval victories, earning the shrine royal decrees and an elevated status it still holds. Set against river, sea mouth and sand dunes, it offers the rare blend of a genuinely sacred pilgrimage site and a scenic, atmospheric stop on the Nghệ coast.
