Joenji

Jōenji (淨圓寺) is a Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha temple tucked into the quiet countryside of Shiinoki, a small neighborhood in Kama city on the forested western edge of Fukuoka Prefecture. Like many local temples in rural Kyushu, it serves as a spiritual anchor for the surrounding community rather than a tourist site—but the area around it holds surprising depth, from ancient horse-breeding heritage to coal-mining history. The temple belongs to the Hongwanji-ha branch of True Pure Land Buddhism, one of Japan's largest Buddhist traditions, founded on the teachings of Shinran Shōnin. It falls under the Kama Group of the Fukuoka Diocese, alongside roughly a dozen other Jodo Shinshu temples in the area.
