Kinta Valley Mariamman Temple

The Kinta Valley Mariamman Temple—also known as the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple—sits on the grounds of the old Kinta Kellas rubber estate near Batu Gajah, deep in Perak's Kinta Valley. What makes it remarkable is its founder: a Scottish planter, William Kellie-Smith, who built it in 1907 as a gesture of thanks to the Hindu goddess Mariamman. A short distance from the half-finished ruin of Kellie's Castle, the temple is the living counterpart to that famous landmark, and a quiet monument to the bond between a colonial planter and the Tamil estate workers he employed. Dedicated to the South Indian mother-goddess Amman, the temple still hosts daily worship and draws devotees—especially those praying for children and family well-being—who believe its prayers are answered swiftly. Its architecture deliberately echoes the grand style of Kellie's Castle, and it has recently become the first Hindu temple in Malaysia to install carved Arca statue panels telling its own century-long story. For travellers exploring the tin-and-rubber heritage of the Kinta Valley, it offers an unusual and heartfelt historical stop.
