Wat Doi Mo (Wat Mae Lao Wanaram)Buddhist temple

Mae Lao District · TH

Wat Doi Mo (Wat Mae Lao Wanaram)

Wat Doi Mo — formally known as Wat Mae Lao Wanaram — sits on gently rising ground in Pa Ko Dam subdistrict, a quiet corner of Mae Lao District in Chiang Rai Province. The temple's name pairs the local hill (doi) with Mae Lao, and the suffix Wanaram (forest monastery) hints at the leafy surroundings that give this community wat its peaceful character. With 43 registered temples in Mae Lao District alone, the area pulses with village Buddhist life, and Wat Doi Mo is one of its quieter, more intimate expressions. Unlike the tourist-heavy temples of central Chiang Rai, Wat Doi Mo is first and foremost a working temple for the people around it — a place for merit-making on Buddhist holy days, for ordinations, and for the steady rhythms of monastic life. Visitors who find their way here are usually rewarded with authenticity: open grounds, an unhurried atmosphere, and views across the flat agricultural basin that stretches toward forested ridgelines.
