Chapultepec Cincalco Cave

Tucked into the lower slopes of Cerro del Chapulín inside Bosque de Chapultepec, the Cueva de Cincalco is one of Mexico City's oldest and most quietly sacred spots. To the Toltec and later the Mexica, this was no ordinary cave: in Nahuatl its name means roughly "house of ears of corn," and they believed it was a portal to the Mictlán—the underworld—where the souls of the dead passed beyond. Legend holds that Huémac, the last Toltec ruler, took his own life here around 1162 after the fall of his people, and that centuries later Moctezuma II, sensing the doom of Tenochtitlán, wished to end his days in the same cave so his soul could slip into the afterlife. The Spanish saw it as a kind of gateway to hell; the peoples who came before them saw a place of Tláloc, god of water, whose dwelling they placed on the hill's southern slope. Today the cavern itself is sealed for public safety, but the landmark endures in the heart of the park, absorbed into the garden-amphitheatre known as the Audiorama. It remains a moving waypoint for anyone interested in the pre-Hispanic story beneath the capital, and a favourite stop on guided walks that reach the hill's hidden monuments.
