Laguna Atillo

Laguna Atillo is one of the high páramo lakes of the Atillo complex, a chain of dark-water lagoons strung along the Guamote–Macas road on the eastern edge of Sangay National Park in Chimborazo province. Sitting at roughly 3,500 metres, it lies at a true turning point of the Andes: open grasslands and cushion bogs to the west, and beyond the pass the road begins its long drop into the cloud forest and Amazon foothills. Several of these lakes can be seen without ever leaving the roadside, which makes Laguna Atillo a striking stop on the drive between the Sierra and the Oriente. The appeal here is atmosphere rather than attractions: mirror-calm water ringed by pajonales grasses and rocky ridges, a bitter-cold clean light, and the easy hospitality of the Kichwa community of Cebadas, whose families run trout and hot-drink stands near the lakes. Local legend adds a darker note—storytellers say the Puruhá once used the cold, isolated lagoons as a natural prison, and that one lake is 'enchanted.'
