Sierra del Carmen
The Sierra del Carmen is a wild "sky island"—a remote mountain range that thrusts straight out of the Chihuahuan Desert in northern Coahuila, Mexico. As the northernmost finger of the Sierra Madre Oriental, it rises from desert floor near the Rio Grande to a high point of 2,720 m (8,920 ft), wrapping desert scrub below into oak woodland, pine forest and cool stands of Douglas and Durango fir above. There are no towns, rivers or paved roads inside it, which is exactly why it rewards a visit. Much of the range is shielded as the Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and linked across the border to Big Bend National Park in a binational conservation corridor. The draw here is the big, untouched landscape: sheer limestone escarpments, dramatic river canyons, abundant birds and the chance to feel genuinely off the map.
