El Faro de Punta de Lobos
Perched on a raw stretch of central Chile's Pacific coast in the comuna of Vichuquén (Maule Region), El Faro de Punta de Lobos is the same beacon catalogued by the Navy as Faro Trilco, also known as Faro Alcatraz or 'Alcatraz de Los Lobos.' It has a singular distinction: it is the first privately built lighthouse on Chile's coast, raised by Curicó entrepreneur Sydney Ojeda and inaugurated on 17 November 2006. The result is less a tidy maritime monument than an eccentric, fortress-like headland where a working light meets a personal shrine to the sea. For most visitors the draw is the approach itself. The lighthouse sits on private, gated land, so the experience is an out-and-back trek along wild beaches and grassy hillsides to catch the structure and the sweeping ocean views from outside its perimeter — a medium-difficulty walk that families and nature lovers rate as one of the finest coastal hikes in the Vichuquén area.
