Csillaghegyi OrszágzászlóPark

Budapest · HU

Csillaghegyi Országzászló

Tucked into the quiet, leafy Csillaghegy neighbourhood of Budapest's District III, the Csillaghegyi Országzászló is less a sightseeing stop than a small piece of Hungarian memory cast in stone and grass. At its heart stands the national-flag memorial (országzászló) that gives the place its name, set in a neatly kept square on Petőfi tér beside the suburban HÉV railway. The monument has been raised, pulled down and raised again over eight decades, and its layered history is the real reason to pause here. For a visitor it is a calm, easy-going green corner: a well-maintained park with benches, a row of stones marking the legendary Seven Chieftains of the Hungarian land-taking, a fenced playground next door, and 24-hour free access. It is a place where locals walk dogs, sit with a book, or bring small children — but it is also a solemn memorial tied to the Trianon era and to modern 'national solidarity' commemorations, so it rewards a quiet, attentive look.
