Geological Museum of Vietnam

Tucked along Nguyễn Bỉnh Khiêm in District 1, the Geological Museum of Vietnam (Bảo tàng Địa chất Việt Nam) is a compact, free-to-enter institution that reads like a field notebook on a national scale. Inside a 1970 building of three floors and roughly 300 m², it preserves some 13,000 geological and mineral specimens, of which about 3,000 are on permanent display, alongside tens of thousands of drill cores and 50 paleontological collections. It is not a flashy venue. Wooden cabinets, louvered shutters and worn paint give it the unhurried look of a 1980s Saigon classroom. But for anyone curious about how the land beneath Vietnam actually came together — the gems in the central highlands, the crude oil offshore, the corals and clams of the Trường Sa archipelago — it packs a surprising amount of substance into one unhurried afternoon.
