Loranchet Peninsula

Loranchet Peninsula (Péninsule Loranchet) forms the wild north-western tip of Grande Terre, the main island of the subantarctic Kerguelen archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean. Part of France's remote French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF), it is a long, mountainous finger of land fringed by steep cliffs cut by fjords, and human visitation is rare. Its real claim to fame is wildlife. The northern end is an internationally recognized Important Bird Area where some 250,000 pairs of macaroni penguins crowd the tip, alongside rockhopper penguins, black-browed and light-mantled albatrosses, petrels, shags and terns, with Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals breeding on the shore. Loranchet is not a casual destination: access is by sea only, the archipelago is a protected natural reserve, and reaching it usually means joining a scientific mission or an expedition cruise out of Reunion. It rewards those who make the journey as one of Earth's last great seabird wildernesses.
