Harashima Shrine

Harashima Shrine (原島神社, also venerated as Harashima Daimyōjin) sits on the tiny island of Harashima, one of the low basalt islets scattered off the port of Gonoura on Iki Island in Nagasaki Prefecture. A short ferry ride from the main island drops you on a quiet farming-and-fishing community of just a few dozen people, and the shrine—set on the island's southern shore with its torii gate standing face-on to the sea—is the spiritual centre of this far-flung place. The shrine enshrines the three sister goddesses of the sea and safe passage—Tagitsuhime, Nakatsuhime and Ichikishimahime (the Sumiyoshi/Munakata deities)—which explains why its torii is turned toward the open water rather than inland. A community whose life revolves around fishing and boat travel keeps a shrine of navigational gods at its edge: a small, very pure example of the seafaring faith that runs through all of Iki. This is not a polished sightseeing stop but a place to travel to slowly: ride the ferry, walk or cycle the gentle lanes past white daffodils and weathered stone seawalls, greet the shrine facing the sea, and time your day so you catch the last boat back. If you like the idea of a half-day of quiet island air, open horizons and a small living shrine, Harashima is an unusual and rewarding detour on Iki.
