Sabanci Central Mosque
The Sabancı Central Mosque is the undisputed skyline landmark of Adana and the largest mosque in Turkey, a vast Ottoman-classical edifice whose six pencil-thin minarets can be spotted from nearly anywhere in the city. Opened for worship in 1998 on the west bank of the Seyhan River, just south of Merkez Park, it holds up to 28,000 worshippers and ranks among the biggest mosques in the Balkans and the Middle East. For visitors, the appeal is the sheer, light-flooded grandeur of the interior: a 32-metre dome ringed with windows, Iznik-style tilework, monumental calligraphy and the four huge panels facing the qibla that are the world's largest in any mosque. Set against the river and an open park, it is one of the most photogenic modern mosques in the country and an easy, free stop on any day in Adana.
