Gankakejizoson

At a quiet Y-shaped fork in the Nogata district of Nakano, a hooded roadside shelter guards three weathered stone monuments known collectively as the Gankake Jizō Shrine (がんかけ地蔵尊). Far from a grand temple, it is one of Tokyo's intimate 'living' sacred spots — a place where passers-by toss a coin and voice a wish to a Jizō statue carved nearly three centuries ago. The name itself is a gentle pun: 'gan-kake' reads as 願かけ, the act of making a prayerful wish, while evoking the idea of warding off illness. Locals stop here to offer hopes for health, luck and long life, keeping a tradition that stretches back to the Edo period alive on an ordinary city corner.
