Manastir Kuveždin

Kuveždin Monastery is a Serbian Orthodox monastery tucked into the wooded southwestern slopes of Fruška Gora, just north of the village of Divoš in Vojvodina. Traditionally founded in 1520 by the last Serbian despot Stefan Štiljanović and first recorded in Ottoman registers of the 1560s, it is dedicated to Saint Sava and his father Saint Simeon. A rambling complex of churches, towers and dormitory buildings, it is one of the monasteries that give Fruška Gora its reputation as a 'Holy Mountain' of the Serbs. What makes Kuveždin special is the story written into its stones: a rich monastery twice blown to ruin, then patiently raised again from soot-blackened walls into a living, worshipping community. Today a brotherhood of monks tends the restored church, the bell tower, the 1537 fountain outside the gate and a Baroque cemetery chapel, while the liturgy goes on daily. It is a quiet, contemplative stop rather than a ticketed attraction, ideal for travelers combining Fruška Gora monasteries, vineyards and forest walks.
