Noma Sea of Clouds Viewing Spot
Misato, tucked in the mountains of Shimane Prefecture, faces no ocean at all—yet most mornings in the right season a white sea fills the valley below. The Noma Sea of Clouds Viewing Spot (Noma Unkai) is one of the two places the town directs visitors to for this spectacle: a roadside platform set high on the ridge above Kasubuchi, looking down over a slow, breathing ocean of mist and out across the rolling ridgelines of the Chugoku Mountains. What makes Noma special is its mood. Where the town's other famous spot, Tanohara, is known for a roaring, waterfall-like cloud flow, the mist at Noma is gentler—a soft blanket that wraps the town and the bends of the Gono River below. It is a quiet, almost private view, the kind of early-morning scene that rewards an alarm set well before sunrise.
