Ji ZoinBuddhist temple

Kanzakimachi-kanzaki · JP

Ji Zoin

Set against the green flank of Mount Niiyama in Kanzaki, Saga, Jizō-in (仁比山地蔵院, Niiyama Jizō-in) is a quiet Tendai temple that calls itself a “temple of the heart” — a place where incense, seasonal colour and a hidden golden Kannon draw pilgrims and wanderers alike. With a tradition stretching back more than thirteen centuries, it is the sole survivor of a once-vast monastic complex and today forms the 20th stop on the Kyūshū Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, one of Japan’s oldest circuits of sacred sites. What makes a visit memorable is its intimate, unhurried character: a modest main hall you are free to step inside to admire 54 flower-painted ceiling panels, an ancient Six Jizō stone tower prayed to for love and safe childbirth, and a revered Thousand-Armed Kannon kept sealed from public view for most of the year and revealed only during a special autumn opening. Admission is free, and the temple pairs beautifully with the celebrated Kyūnen-an garden a short walk away.
