Gornji Grad

Gornji Grad — the "Upper Town" — is the medieval hilltop heart of Zagreb, a labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, Baroque palaces and old city walls that has barely changed in shape since the 13th century. Perched on the ridge of Grič and largely closed to car traffic, it pairs a quiet, lantern-lit old-town charm with some of the capital's most important sights, and rewards the short climb (or the quick funicular ride up) with sweeping views over the rooftops below. The district's own listing sits around the Dverce, the old southern gate of the fortified town, and is best known to visitors as an observation point: from here you can reach the Lotrščak Tower viewpoint and the leafy Strossmayer Promenade that trace the line of the medieval walls. Beyond the view, Gornji Grad is a compact walking day out — St Mark's Square, the Stone Gate, the bustling Dolac market and the pastel cafe street of Tkalčićeva are all within a few minutes on foot.
