AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Talima Marine Sanctuary is a protected coral reef on the Olango side of the channel that separates Olango Island from Mactan, in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. A short boat hop from Mactan's resorts, it pairs a gently sloping, easy-to-snorkel reef plateau with a dramatic wall that drops past 40 metres, making it one of the closest and most rewarding underwater escapes near Cebu-Mactan's airport.↗↗↗
Declared and managed as a municipal fish sanctuary, Talima has rebuilt from reefs once scarred by illegal fishing into a thriving habitat of hard and soft corals, sea fans and big schooling fish. For visitors it offers snorkeling and scuba diving in warm, clear water, abundant marine life, and the satisfaction of spending your day-fee on local conservation.↗↗
A Reef Worth the Short Boat Ride
For all the long transfers many Philippine dive spots demand, Talima is remarkably easy to reach. The sanctuary lies roughly two nautical miles out from the Mactan side, about a 5-to-10-minute boat ride from the dive centres along Punta Engaño near Shangri-La Mactan, and a brief hop from barangays on Olango. That proximity to Mactan's hotels and to Cebu's international airport makes it an ideal half-day outing: you can be in the water within the hour and back onshore by lunchtime.
