AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Dewa Sri Durgai Amman is a small Tamil Hindu temple — an alayam — tucked into the Taman Kampong Majid / Ladang Batu Dua neighborhood just outside Kluang, in Johor. Dedicated to Durgai Amman, the Tamil form of the goddess Durga, it serves as a quiet local place of worship rather than a curated tourist attraction, and it is exactly that neighborhood warmth that gives it charm.↗↗↗
You are unlikely to find it on any tour itinerary, and there is no grand gateway or ticketed entry to seek out. What you do find is a working community kovil, set among the palm-fringed estate roads of the Kluang district, where the rhythm of daily puja and seasonal festivals matters far more than visitor crowds. For travelers exploring the Hindu heritage of southern Johor, it offers an honest glimpse of faith lived at the local level.
What the temple is
Like many Tamil temples across Malaysia, this one carries the hallmarks of its community: a modest shrine complex devoted to a protective village goddess. The name 'Durgai Amman' points to Durga, the powerful mother-goddess of the Hindu tradition, worshipped in the Tamil manner as Amman. The word 'alayam' (also spelt alayam/alayam for temple) tells you this is part of the Tamil devotional world, and 'Dewa Sri' marks its reverent title.
