AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the quiet heart of Olathala, a small hamlet in Pattanakkad village near Cherthala, this temple pairs two powerful deities: Khandakarnan, the fierce healing form born from Shiva's throat, and Annapoorneswari, the gracious goddess of nourishment. It is a place where village devotion runs deep, set amid the paddy fields and backwater channels of Alappuzha district's interior countryside.↗↗↗
Visitors describe a peaceful, intimate atmosphere at this newly reconstructed shrine. With free entry, available parking, and no crowds on ordinary days, it offers a genuine glimpse into Kerala's living temple culture away from the famous tourist circuit.↗
The Deities
The temple's full name tells you almost everything about its character. Khandakarnan — from the Malayalam for "throat-ear," referencing the myth of his birth from Lord Shiva's throat — is a fierce Shaiva deity long propitiated for protection and healing. Annapoorneswari, the goddess of abundance and food, represents the nurturing counterpart. Together they form a powerful pairing: the one who wards off illness and misfortune, and the one who ensures the household never lacks.
