AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Madhure Kere is a broad, shallow lake set in open Deccan countryside about an hour north of Bengaluru, near Doddaballapur. Listed on eBird among Karnataka's top hotspots for species recorded, it has quietly become one of the best places near the city to watch migratory waders—small but brimming with life.↗↗↗
What gives the lake its character is the rhythm of the monsoon: as the water rises and then retreats, it leaves wide muddy shores and shallow pools that turn into feeding grounds for birds travelling all the way from Central Asia and the Himalayas. The surrounding grassland, thorny scrub and farmland—open patches fast disappearing around Bengaluru—support peafowl, doves, coucals and raptors that hunt over the bare ground.↗
Tagged on Maps as a fishing camp, Madhure Kere is an informal, uncommercial spot rather than a developed resort, so visits are best combined with slow nature-watching and birding—a place for early mornings, binoculars and patience, not ticketed attractions.↗
